Johnstown uses shootout to best Soo, 5-4 (4-2 SO)Pullar Stadium Sat, Jan 26, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Johnstown Tomahawks defeated the Soo Eagles in a shootout 5-4 (4-2 SO). The shootout lasted for nine attempts between the teams. Soo got shootout goals from Sean Murphy and Michael Covach. Johnstown's other shootout goals were scored by Mitch Hall, Cody Gylling, and Jordan Watt.The Tomahawks overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Johnstown fell behind 3-1 after a goal by the Eagles' Alexander Taulien at 13:22 in the second period. The Tomahawks tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Connor Wright at 11:24 in the third period. The 47 shots that Johnstown put on net surpassed the Tomahawks' average of 26.6 shots per game this season. Johnstown was helped by Gylling, who racked up two goals and one assist. Gylling scored the first of his two goals at 1:24 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Mitch Kontny provided the assist. Gylling's next tally made the score 3-3 with 9:19 left in the third period. An elbowing penalty on Robin Hoglund had put the Tomahawks on the power play. Kontny assisted on the tally. Johnstown also got a goal from Hall as well. In addition, Johnstown received assists from Ian Spencer, Zack Wallace, and Watt, who each chipped in one. Soo's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Eagles give up 2.5 goals per game. Soo relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Taulien, Murphy and Pat Thompson took 19 of the team's 35 shots. The Eagles were led by Brandon Adams, who registered two goals. Adams scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 5:04 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Soo. Soo had taken the advantage when Johnstown's Jake Fairchild got sent off for high sticking. Jared VanWormer picked up the assist. Adams' next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Soo with 9:01 left in the third period. The Eagles earned a power play opportunity when Brandon Reinholz was put in the box for roughing. VanWormer provided the assist. Soo additionally got points from Murphy, who also tallied one goal and one assist. More assists for Soo came via Alex Robert, Pat Gazzillo, McFarlanne B, Covach, and Eric Rivard, who contributed one a piece. The Tomahawks took out Collin Brennan after he had made 31 saves and installed Chris Truehl in goal, where he finished with zero saves and the win. Johnstown incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Zach Nagelvoort made 37 saves before being replaced by Tyler Marble, who took the otl and made five saves. Soo incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
