Corpus Christi blows out Odessa, 6-2

The Corpus Christi IceRays had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 6-2 win over the Odessa Jackalopes.

Rudy Sulmonde was all over the ice for Corpus Christi, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Sulmonde scored on the power play 3:43 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Corpus Christi. The IceRays had taken the advantage when Odessa's Mike Mezzano got sent off for roughing. Michael Economos picked up the assist.

Corpus Christi's penalty kill excelled, as the IceRays gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

Corpus Christi stifled the Jackalopes' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The 30 shots that the IceRays put on net surpassed Corpus Christi's average of 23.4 shots per game this season. The IceRays' goal total was higher than their season average. Corpus Christi averages 3.1 goals per game. The IceRays were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 26 penalty minutes.

Corpus Christi additionally got points from Beau Walker, who also racked up one goal and two assists and Emil Romig, who also registered one goal and one assist. Corpus Christi also got a goal from Brandon Smith as well. In addition, Corpus Christi received assists from John Roisum, Jalen Schulz, Joe Ginley, Brandon Berkley, and Eric Purcell, who each chipped in one.

Odessa forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The Jackalopes had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. With 21 shots on target during the contest, Odessa exceeded the 15.3 shots it averages per game this year. The Jackalopes' defensemen bolstered Odessa's offensive attack, as they bombarded Ben Myers with 12 shots.

The Jackalopes were led by Matt Volonnino, who had one goal. Volonnino scored 16:01 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Corpus Christi. Matthieu Audet provided the assist. Taylor Portner also scored for Odessa. More assists for Odessa came via Anthony Olguin, Lawrence Cornellier, and Corey Hoffman, who contributed one a piece.

Myers recorded 19 saves for Corpus Christi. The IceRays registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Odessa's starting goalie, Nick Deery, made six saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Erick Majerle, who stopped 18 shots.
