Kalamazoo vanquishes Janesville in shootout, 6-5 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings defeated the Janesville Jets in a shootout 6-5 (2-0 SO).

The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams. In addition to the clincher, Kalamazoo got a shootout goal from Kyle Gattelaro.

Robbie Payne was all over the ice for the Jr. K-Wings, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Payne scored the first of his two goals short handed at 12:52 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo was on a disadvantage when Danny Hamburg went off the ice for hooking. Brendan Vetter picked up the assist. Payne's next tally short handed made the score 5-5 with 5:08 left in the second period.

The Jr. K-Wings bested their season scoring average. Kalamazoo averages 3.2 goals per game. The Jr. K-Wings' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Kalamazoo finished with 32 penalty minutes. The Jr. K-Wings' offense was clicking better than usual and put 35 shots on goal during the game, better than the 28.2 shots per game they average.

Kalamazoo also got points from Gattelaro, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Brett Beauvais, who also had one goal and one assist. Davis Dekorte also scored for Kalamazoo. Other players who recorded assists for Kalamazoo were Lucas Kohls, Trevor Boyd, Mac McDonnell, and Cole Pierce, who contributed one a piece.

Janesville's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Jets average 2.4 goals per contest. Janesville found itself short handed often, totaling 30 penalty minutes and allowing seven power plays. The Jets put 38 shots on net during the contest, more than the 20.3 they average per game.

Janesville was helped by Jason Ford, who registered two goals. Ford scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 7:01 into the second period to make the score 4-3 Kalamazoo. The Jets had taken the advantage when Kalamazoo's Payne got sent off for tripping. Todd Koritzinsky assisted on the tally. Ford's next tally on the power play made the score 4-4 with 11:58 left in the second period. Pedlan Ruslan picked up the assist. Janesville additionally got points from Zach Diamantoni, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Koritzinsky, who also grabbed one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Janesville also got a goal from Conor Lemirande as well. More assists for Janesville came via Ryan Dau, who had one and Kucerovy, who had three.

The Jr. K-Wings took out Alex Okicki after he had made 11 saves and installed Marcus Due-Boje in goal, where he finished with 22 saves and the win. Austin Priebe made eight saves before being replaced by Brock Kautz, who took the otl and made 21 saves. Janesville registered two goals on eight power play opportunities.
