Atkinson's big game bests Fairbanks in 6-3 Springfield win

The Springfield Jr. Blues' Ryan Atkinson had a big offensive game, scoring one goal and contributing two assists in his team's 6-3 win over the Fairbanks Ice Dogs.

Atkinson beat Kevin Aldridge with a shot 11:25 into the third period on the power play to make the score 4-3 Springfield. Springfield had gotten the advantage when Fairbanks' Ben Campbell was sent off for hooking. Parker Johnson picked up the assist. Atkinson dished an assist on Jeff McFarland's goal that made the score 2-1 Springfield at 2:31 into the second period. He added another helper on Jack Sloan's goal that made the score 5-3 Springfield at 14:31 into the third period.

The Jr. Blues outdid their season average for goals scored. Springfield has scored at the pace of 2.6 goals per game during the current campaign. The Jr. Blues cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring three goals on four chances. Springfield got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game.

Springfield additionally got points from Mitch Rogge, who also registered one goal and one assist, McFarland, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Jon Carkeek, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Springfield also got a goal from Terry Leibo as well. More assists for Springfield came via Trevor Stone, who had two and Oliver Takacsi-Nagy and Alex Baskakov, who each chipped in one.

The Ice Dogs put 30 shots on net during the contest, more than the 27.2 they average per game. Fairbanks gave up more goals than its normal season average. The Ice Dogs average 2.5 goals allowed per game.

Fairbanks was led by Devin Loe, who racked up one goal and one assist. Loe scored on the power play 3:55 into the second period to make the score 2-2. A holding penalty on Baskakov had put the Ice Dogs on the power play. Nick Hinz assisted on the tally. Garret Clemment also scored for Fairbanks. In addition, Fairbanks received assists from Kyle Lee, who had two and Johnny Meuller and Lonnie Clary, who contributed one a piece.

Matt Leon recorded 27 saves for the Jr. Blues. Springfield incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Fairbanks' Aldridge stopped 20 shots out of the 26 that he faced. The Ice Dogs incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
