Springfield downs Port Huron, 4-0

McMorran Arena - Main    Fri, Jan 04, 2013

Ryan Atkinson grabbed one point to lead the Springfield Jr. Blues to a 4-0 victory over the Port Huron Fighting Falcons.

Springfield stifled Port Huron's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Jr. Blues' defensive play was more effective than usual against the Fighting Falcons. Springfield allows 3.0 goals per game.

Springfield additionally got points from Brett Skibba, who also registered one goal and two assists and Mike Fazio, who also racked up two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Springfield were Jack Sloan, Jeff McFarland, Parker Johnson, and Alex Baskakov, who each chipped in one.

The Port Huron penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game the Fighting Falcons had been spending in the box. Port Huron allowed the opposing netminder to relax, racking up only 14 shots on goal to force 14 saves. The shot total fell below the Fighting Falcons' season average of 23.4 shots per game. Port Huron did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Fighting Falcons average 2.7 goals per game. Port Huron's offense was helped by the efforts of its defensemen, who managed to put seven shots on net during the game.

The Fighting Falcons were led by Dunk Abbott, who took three shots.

Matt Leon recorded 14 saves for the Jr. Blues. Springfield incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Max Milosek made 25 saves for Port Huron on 29 shots. The Fighting Falcons registered zero goals on three power play opportunities.
