Kalamazoo vanquishes Johnstown in shootout, 3-2 (3-0 SO)Cambria County War Memorial Mon, Dec 31, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings defeated the Johnstown Tomahawks in a shootout 3-2 (3-0 SO). The shootout lasted for seven attempts between the teams. Kalamazoo's other shootout goals were scored by Robbie Payne and Kyle Gattelaro.In a losing effort, Johnstown was sparked by Mitch Kontny, who had two goals. Kontny scored the first of his two goals at 16:03 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Johnstown. Jordan Watt provided the assist. Kontny's next tally made the score 2-2 with 3:49 left in the third period. Casey Nelson picked up the assist. The Jr. K-Wings were paced by Gattelaro, who registered one goal and one assist. Gattelaro scored on the power play 8:50 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo had taken the advantage when the Tomahawks' Connor Wright got sent off for charging. Mark Esshaki provided the assist. The Jr. K-Wings stifled Johnstown's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. With 30 shots on target during the contest, Kalamazoo exceeded the 25.2 shots it averages per game this year. Kalamazoo also got a goal from Taylor Burden as well. More assists for Kalamazoo came via Payne, who had one. The Tomahawks' offense was helped by the efforts of their defensemen, who managed to put 18 shots on net during the game. Johnstown's offense was clicking better than usual and put 43 shots on goal during the game, better than the 27.2 shots per game it averages. The Jr. K-Wings' Marcus Due-Boje stopped 41 shots out of the 43 that he faced. Kalamazoo totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Collin Brennan recorded 27 saves for the Tomahawks. Johnstown totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-3 on the power play.
