GAME RECAP

Springfield vanquishes Janesville in shootout, 2-1 (2-1 SO)

Janesville Ice Arena    Sat, Dec 22, 2012

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Springfield Jr. Blues defeated the Janesville Jets in a shootout 2-1 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured 30 attempts between both teams. Janesville's shootout goal was scored by Pedlan Ruslan. In addition to the clincher, Springfield got a shootout goal from Mitch Rogge.

The Jr. Blues' Ryan Kellenberger was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 32 saves and let only one puck past him. Kellenberger managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.97 prior to the game.

Springfield put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Jets to score on any of their five power plays. The Jr. Blues' offense was clicking better than usual and put 37 shots on goal during the game, better than the 24.2 shots per game they average.

Springfield was led by Mike Fazio, who tallied one goal. Fazio scored 6:47 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Springfield. Nate Chasteen assisted on the tally. More assists for Springfield came via Jon Carkeek, who had one.

Janesville forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. The Jets surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. Janesville excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. The Jets' offense was helped by the efforts of their defensemen, who managed to put 15 shots on net during the game. The Jr. Blues were unable to stop Janesville from sending pucks towards the net, and the Jets eventually piled up 33 shots on goal.

Janesville was led by Ruslan, who scored the team's only goal. Ruslan scored 55 seconds into the third period to make the score 1-1.

Springfield ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. The Jets' Austin Priebe stopped 35 shots out of the 36 that he faced.
