Amarillo uses early goal to top Topeka, 3-1

The Amarillo Bulls beat the Topeka RoadRunners, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Mike Davis provided Amarillo with the game-winning tally when he scored 10:36 into the the first period. Joe Grabowski provided the assist.

The Bulls were led by Ryan Cole, who tallied one goal and one assist. Cole scored short handed 15:35 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Amarillo. Amarillo found itself down a man on John Rey's holding. Brady Ferguson assisted on the tally.

The Bulls stifled Topeka's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Amarillo failed to reach its usual level of shot production, putting 24 pucks on goal after averaging 30.7 shots per game this season. The Bulls could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Amarillo also got a goal from Omar Mullan as well. More assists for Amarillo came via TJ Sherman, who had one.

The RoadRunners excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Topeka was held below its usual level of production. The RoadRunners put an average of 3.2 pucks into the net per game. Topeka relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Brandon Brossoit, Sean Gaffney and Jerad Tafoya took 12 of the team's 22 shots. The RoadRunners were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 28 penalty minutes.

Paul Berrafato made 21 saves for Amarillo on 22 shots. Spencer Viele rejected 21 shots on goal for Topeka. The RoadRunners registered zero goals on five power play opportunities.
