Springfield wins tough contest against Topeka, 3-2

The game between the Springfield Jr. Blues and the Topeka RoadRunners was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Springfield emerged with a 3-2 win.

The Jr. Blues gained the winning advantage on a goal by Mike Fazio 19:31 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

Springfield was led by Fazio, who grabbed one goal.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 20:00 into the third period. Three fighting penalties were dished out along with 14 game misconducts.

The Jr. Blues were often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and one major for 69 minutes in penalty time. Springfield surpassed its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. The Jr. Blues put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Topeka to score on any of its four power plays.

Springfield also got points from Ryan Atkinson, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Terry Leibo also scored for Springfield. In addition, Springfield received assists from Brett Skibba, who had two and Mike Severson, Dallas Crum, and Jon Carkeek, who each chipped in one.

The RoadRunners racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with three minors and four majors for 136 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 25.0 minutes per game Topeka had been spending in the box. With 34 shots on target during the contest, the RoadRunners exceeded the 27.4 shots they average per game this year.

Topeka was helped by Mick Bruce, who tallied one goal. Bruce scored 14:59 into the third period to make the score 2-2. Kyle Sharkey assisted on the tally. Topeka also got a goal from Tyler Andrew as well. More assists for Topeka came via Michal Pastor and Sean Gaffney, who contributed one a piece.

Ryan Kellenberger made 32 saves for Springfield on 34 shots. The Jr. Blues registered zero goals on one power play opportunities. For Springfield, Jack Sloan, Ji Young Li, Simon Koscielski, and Carkeek were ejected from the contest. The RoadRunners' Mackenzie Sawyer stopped 19 shots out of the 22 that he faced. Team's Kevin Patterson, Jake Kamrass, Drew Kariofiles, Peter Halash, and Codey Hansen were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
