Corpus Christi beats Amarillo 3-2 after comeback scare

The Amarillo Bulls tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Corpus Christi IceRays held on for a 3-2 victory.

Corpus Christi made the score 3-0 on a goal by Eric Purcell at 6:21 in the second period, and Amarillo got as close as 3-2 when John Rey scored 14:53 into the third period.

The IceRays got the win on the strength of a great game by Charles Baldwin, who had one goal and two assists. Baldwin scored 12 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-0 Corpus Christi. Michael Economos assisted on the tally.

Corpus Christi put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Bulls to score on any of their four power plays.

Corpus Christi also got a goal from AJ Jarosz as well. In addition, Corpus Christi received assists from Brandon Smith, who had one.

Amarillo did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Bulls put an average of 4.5 pucks into the net per game. Amarillo relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Rey, Mike Davis and Tyler Deresky took 20 of the team's 39 shots.

The Bulls were helped by TJ Sarcona, who finished with one goal. Sarcona scored short handed 16:10 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Corpus Christi. Amarillo was on a disadvantage when Omar Mullan went off the ice for delay of game. Deresky provided the assist. More assists for Amarillo came via Matt Sieckhaus, who had one.

Hayden Stewart recorded 37 saves for the IceRays. Corpus Christi incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Chad Catt made 22 saves for the Bulls on 25 shots. Amarillo incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
