Springfield wins tough contest against Soo, 5-3

The Springfield Jr. Blues and the Soo Eagles were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Springfield made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Jack Sloan's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

James McGing had two goals to lead the Jr. Blues to victory. McGing found the back of the net 13:18 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and again while 9:29 into the second to make the score 3-3.

Springfield found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Jr. Blues have scored at the pace of 2.9 goals per game during the current campaign. With 35 shots on target during the contest, Springfield exceeded the 29.4 shots it averages per game this year. The Jr. Blues' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Springfield finished with 26 penalty minutes.

Springfield also got a goal from Nate Chasteen as well. In addition, Springfield received assists from Trevor Stone, Parker Johnson, Mike Fazio, and Alex Baskakov, who each chipped in one and Mitch Rogge, Brett Skibba, and Ryan Atkinson, who contributed two a piece.

Soo's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Eagles are averaging 2.3 goals against for the season. Soo put 34 shots on net during the contest, more than the 27.3 it averages per game.

The Eagles were helped by Chris Waterstreet, who registered one goal. Waterstreet scored on the power play 9:19 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Soo. Soo had gotten the advantage when the Jr. Blues' Johnson was sent off for checking from behind. Denver Pierce picked up the assist. Dante Suffredini also scored for Soo. Other players who recorded assists for Soo were Cody Von Reuden, Michael Lant, and Jared VanWormer, who each chipped in one.

Matt Leon rejected 31 shots on goal for Springfield. The Jr. Blues registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Tyler Marble recorded 30 saves for the Eagles. Soo incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
