Topeka vanquishes Amarillo in shootout, 3-2 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Topeka RoadRunners defeated the Amarillo Bulls in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for 10 attempts between the teams.

Topeka overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. The RoadRunners trailed 2-1 after a goal by Amarillo's Omar Mullan at 5:15 in the third period. Topeka tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Sean Gaffney at 19:10 in the third period.

The RoadRunners' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Amarillo power plays.

Topeka was helped by Kyle Sharkey, who finished with one goal. Sharkey scored 14:44 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Tyler Andrew provided the assist. Topeka additionally got points from Gaffney, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Topeka were Michal Pastor and Tyler Groat, who each chipped in one.

The Bulls stifled the RoadRunners' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Amarillo was held below its usual level of production. The Bulls put an average of 4.6 pucks into the net per game. Amarillo was often in penalty trouble, as it ended with five minors and two majors for 20 minutes in penalty time. The Bulls' offense was clicking better than usual and put 36 shots on goal during the game, better than the 30.1 shots per game they average.

Amarillo also got a goal from TJ Sarcona as well. More assists for Amarillo came via Geoff Fortman, Gage Christianson, Tyler Rostenkowski, and Hampus Gustafsson, who contributed one a piece.

Topeka's Spencer Viele stopped 34 shots out of the 36 that he faced. The RoadRunners totaled 27 minutes in penalty time with one minor and three majors and went 0-for-4 on the power play. Topeka ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Peter Halash was ejected from the game. Paul Berrafato rejected 21 shots on goal for Amarillo.
