Kalamazoo downs Johnstown in overtime, 5-4 (OT)The Arena Sat, Oct 27, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings pulled out a 5-4 (OT) overtime victory over the Johnstown Tomahawks on a clutch goal by Robbie Payne. Although Kalamazoo was up by as many as three goals in the second period, Johnstown kept the game interesting by staging a comeback that ultimately fell short. The Tomahawks pulled to within 4-3 on a power play goal by Brandon Reinholz at 7:48 in the third period. The Jr. K-Wings got the win thanks to a great game by Payne, who had two goals and one assist. Payne scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 1:19 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Kalamazoo had gained a power play chance when Jeff Bergh was whistled for holding. Josh Dangel picked up the assist. Payne's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Kalamazoo with 19:27 left in overtime. Kalamazoo also got points from Kyle Gattelaro, who also registered one goal and one assist. Kalamazoo also got a goal from Nolan Culver as well. Other players who recorded assists for Kalamazoo were Davis Dekorte, Brett Beauvais, and Donovan Gardiner, who contributed one a piece. The defense for Johnstown played an important role offensively, racking up 18 shots on goal. The Tomahawks' offense was clicking better than usual and put 39 shots on goal during the game, better than the 25.5 shots per game they average. Mike Sandor also scored for Johnstown. More assists for Johnstown came via Ian Spencer, Jaycob McCombs, Casey Nelson, Jake Fairchild, and Mitch Kontny, who each chipped in one. Marcus Due-Boje recorded 35 saves for the Jr. K-Wings. Kalamazoo totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 2-for-2 on the power play. For the Jr. K-Wings, Dangel was ejected from the game. Bodhi Engum made 17 saves before being replaced by Collin Brennan, who took the otl and made six saves. Johnstown incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
