Springfield beats Topeka 2-0 as Leon gains shutout

Matt Leon recorded a shutout against the Topeka RoadRunners as the Springfield Jr. Blues picked up a 2-0 win.

Springfield was led by Devin Mitchell, who racked up one goal. Mitchell scored on the power play 10:06 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Springfield. The Jr. Blues earned a power play opportunity when Tyler Groat was put in the box for roughing. Parker Johnson picked up the assist.

Springfield stifled Topeka's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Jr. Blues was steadier on the defensive front than they have been for much of this season. Springfield gives up 2.8 goals on average per game.

Russell Jordan also scored for Springfield. In addition, Springfield received assists from Alex Baskakov, who had one.

The the RoadRunners penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Topeka surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. The RoadRunners did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Topeka puts an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game. By firing 29 shots on goal, the RoadRunners exceeded the 24.6 shots they average per game this year. Topeka's defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with 13 shots between them.

The RoadRunners were led by Luke Veitch, who took five shots.

Leon rejected 29 shots on goal for the Jr. Blues. Springfield totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Topeka's Mackenzie Sawyer stopped 22 shots out of the 24 that he faced. The RoadRunners registered zero goals on four power play opportunities.
