Aberdeen beats Minot 5-4 after comeback scareOdde Ice Center Sat, Oct 13, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Minot Minotauros tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Aberdeen Wings would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4. Aberdeen took a 5-2 lead during the second period, only to have Minot storm back on a Lucas Oliver goal 16:00 into the third period to pull to one goal down. Tanner Holmquist had a great game for the Wings, netting two goals. Holmquist found the back of the net 3:49 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Aberdeen and again while 15:07 into the second to make the score 4-2 Aberdeen. The 29 shots that Aberdeen put on net surpassed the Wings' average of 24.8 shots per game this season. Aberdeen surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Wings average 2.9 goals per game. Aberdeen was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 26 penalty minutes. Aberdeen also got points from Justin Parizek, who also had one goal and one assist. Aberdeen also got a goal from Peter Krieger as well. In addition, Aberdeen received assists from Erik Baskin, who had three and Dylan Dailey, Patrick Steinhauser, and Joseph Sullivan, who each chipped in one. The Minotauros' offense was clicking better than usual and put 35 shots on goal during the game, better than the 22.6 shots per game they average. Minot was helped by Mason Morelli, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Morelli scored on the power play 14:47 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Aberdeen. The Minotauros earned a power play opportunity when Jake Horton was put in the box for cross checking. Tim Donohue provided the assist. Minot additionally got points from Oliver, who also registered one goal and one assist. Matt Audette also scored for Minot. More assists for Minot came via Cameron Rowat, who had two and Jake OBorsky, Jadin Martin, and Travis Maxwell, who contributed one a piece. Marcus Zelzer made 31 saves for the Wings on 35 shots. Aberdeen registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Minot's Tyler Parks stopped 24 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Minotauros totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 3-for-6 on the power play.
