Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Soo Eagles defeated the Johnstown Tomahawks in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO). The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams.Robin Hoglund had a great game for Soo, netting two goals. Hoglund's tallies came at 6:34 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Soo and 13:34 into the second to make the score 4-3 Soo. The Eagles struggled on the penalty kill, allowing Johnstown to score three power play goals on five chances. Soo put 37 shots on net during the contest, more than the 27.0 it averages per game. Soo also got points from Michael Covach, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Jared VanWormer, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Soo were Alexander Taulien, who had two and Cody Von Reuden, Pat Gazzillo, and Eric Rivard, who contributed one a piece. The Tomahawks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The defense for Johnstown played an important role offensively, racking up 25 shots on goal. The Tomahawks' offense was clicking better than usual and put 61 shots on goal during the game, better than the 28.2 shots per game they average. Johnstown was led by Brandon Reinholz, who racked up one goal and one assist. Reinholz scored on the power play 11:03 into the first period to make the score 1-1.
