Fairbanks uses early goal to top Fresno, 3-1

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs beat the Fresno Monsters, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Patrick Newell provided Fairbanks with the game-winning tally when he scored 1:26 into the the first period. Nick Hinz picked up the assist.

Newell was all over the ice for the Ice Dogs, as he registered two goals in the win.

Fairbanks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Fresno to score on any of its three power plays. By firing 39 shots on goal, the Ice Dogs exceeded the 27.4 shots they average per game this year.

Fairbanks also got points from Garret Clemment, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Fairbanks were Zack Rall, who had one and Kyle Lee, who had two.

The Monsters stifled Fairbanks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The 25 shots that Fresno put on net surpassed the Monsters' average of 18.6 shots per game this season.

Fresno was led by Newton Fuller, who scored the team's only goal. Fuller scored 11:39 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Fairbanks. Trevor Husch assisted on the tally.

Kevin Aldridge rejected 24 shots on goal for the Ice Dogs. Fairbanks totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 0-for-3 on the power play. Tomas Sholl recorded 36 saves for the Monsters. Fresno ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major.
