Port Huron uses shootout to best Soo, 3-2 (1-0 SO)

McMorran Arena - Main    Sat, Oct 06, 2012

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Port Huron Fighting Falcons defeated the Soo Eagles in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout.

Port Huron overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Fighting Falcons trailed 2-1 after a goal by Soo's Michael Crowley at 15:43 in the first period. Port Huron tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Mitch Maloney at 5:14 in the second period.

The Fighting Falcons managed to stay out of the box better than usual, tallying one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Port Huron finished below its season average of 13.0 penalty minutes per game. The 40 shots that the Fighting Falcons put on net surpassed Port Huron's average of 27.0 shots per game this season.

The Fighting Falcons were helped by Rick DeRosa, who racked up one goal. DeRosa scored 5:12 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Port Huron. Zach Badalamenti picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Port Huron were Vito Aluia and Mark Evan Auk, who contributed one a piece.

The Eagles' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Port Huron power plays. With 37 shots on target during the contest, Soo exceeded the 25.5 shots it averages per game this year.

Eric Rivard also scored for Soo. More assists for Soo came via Alex Robert, Dante Suffredini, Mike Sabatini, and Jared VanWormer, who each chipped in one.

Max Milosek made 35 saves for Port Huron on 37 shots. Zach Nagelvoort recorded 37 saves for the Eagles. Soo incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
