Johnstown beats Janesville 5-3 after comeback scare

The Johnstown Tomahawks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Janesville Jets on the way to a 5-3 win.

Johnstown took a 5-1 lead during the third period, only to have Janesville storm back on a Zach Diamantoni goal 17:58 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The Jets' power play was ineffective against the Tomahawks' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Johnstown's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Tomahawks finished with 25 penalty minutes. By firing 38 shots on goal, Johnstown exceeded the 25.1 shots it averages per game this year.

The Tomahawks were led by Brandon Brossoit, who had one goal and two assists. Brossoit scored on the power play 15:54 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Johnstown. Johnstown had gotten the advantage when Janesville's Ryan Gotelaere was sent off for cross checking. Ian Spencer provided the assist. Johnstown also got points from Jaycob McCombs, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Cody Gylling, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Mitch Kontny, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Casey Nelson also scored for Johnstown. In addition, Johnstown received assists from Evan Hesse, Codey Hansen, JB Baker, and Jeff Bergh, who contributed one a piece.

The Jets were often in penalty trouble, totaling 11 minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 23.0 minutes per game Janesville had been spending in the box. The Jets allowed the opposing goalie to relax, taking only 11 shots on goal to force eight saves. Team.mascot's final shot tally was well below the team's average of 15.8 pucks on net per game.

Janesville was led by Jason Ford, who racked up two goals and one assist. Ford scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 13:02 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Johnstown. The Jets earned a power play opportunity when Brandon Platt was put in the box for hooking. Kyle Halladay assisted on the tally. Ford's next tally on the power play made the score 5-2 Johnstown with 11:42 left in the third period. Eric Carlson provided the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Janesville were Bryan Kronberger, Jack Billings, and Conor Lemirande, who each chipped in one.

Bodhi Engum recorded eight saves for the Tomahawks. Johnstown registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. Brock Kautz took the loss and made 26 saves before being replaced by Austin Priebe who made seven saves.
