Fairbanks wins tough contest against Wenatchee, 5-3

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs gutted out a close 5-3 win against the Wenatchee Wild.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Brett Gervais at 17:21 of the third period.

Devin Loe had two goals to lead Fairbanks to victory. Loe found the back of the net 10:28 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and again while 12:20 into the third to make the score 3-3.

Wenatchee's power play was ineffective against the Ice Dogs' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:50 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Fairbanks penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and two majors for 34 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 15.0 minutes per game the Ice Dogs had been spending in the box. Fairbanks put 30 shots on net during the contest, more than the 25.8 it averages per game.

Garret Clemment also scored for Fairbanks. In addition, Fairbanks received assists from Doug Rose, who had two and Nick Hinz, Jakob Romo, Zack Rall, and Jayson Angus, who each chipped in one.

The Wild's normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. Wenatchee gives up 2.1 goals per game. The Wild were hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time.

Wenatchee was helped by Max McHugh, who tallied one goal. McHugh scored on the power play 10:10 into the third period to make the score 2-2. The Wild earned a power play opportunity when Loe was put in the box for interference. Jacob Barber provided the assist. Wenatchee also got points from Blake Roubos, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Wenatchee also got a goal from Noah Nelson as well. More assists for Wenatchee came via David Powlowski, who had two and Chris Diver and Nicholas Kuchera, who contributed one a piece.

Steve Perry made 21 saves for the Ice Dogs on 24 shots. Fairbanks registered one goal on six power play opportunities. The Ice Dogs ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Colton Wolter was ejected from the game. Robert Nichols rejected 25 shots on goal for Wenatchee. For the Wild, Evan Schmidbauer was ejected from the game.
