GAME RECAP

Michigan vanquishes Johnstown in shootout, 3-2 (3-0 SO)

Cambria County War Memorial    Sat, Sep 29, 2012

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Michigan Warriors defeated the Johnstown Tomahawks in a shootout 3-2 (3-0 SO).

The shootout featured seven attempts between both teams. Michigan also got shootout goals from AJ Marcinek and Brock Labelle.

The Warriors overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Michigan trailed 2-1 after a goal by Johnstown's Cobi Smith-Mass at 17:27 in the second period. The Warriors tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Jake Hopfner at 16:51 in the third period.

Hopfner was all over the ice for Michigan, as he grabbed two goals in the win.

The Warriors racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. Michigan surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. The Warriors' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Johnstown power plays. Michigan put 27 shots on net during the contest, more than the 23.0 it averages per game.

More assists for Michigan came via Luke Rendino, Colin Larkin, and Connor Lyons, who each chipped in one.

The Tomahawks were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 27 penalty minutes. Johnstown relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Smith-Mass, Codey Hansen and Casey Nelson took 13 of the team's 25 shots.

The Tomahawks were helped by Brandon Reinholz, who tallied one goal. Reinholz scored 10:24 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Johnstown. Cody Bentzel assisted on the tally.

Michael Pesendorfer recorded 23 saves for the Warriors. Michigan registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. Johnstown's Chris Truehl stopped 24 shots out of the 26 that he faced.
