Brookings holds on for 3-2 win against Aberdeen

The Brookings Blizzard survived a determined comeback attempt by the Aberdeen Wings on the way to a 3-2 win.

Brookings made the score 3-1 on a goal by Thomas Williams at 14:29 in the third period, and Aberdeen got as close as 3-2 when Joseph Sullivan scored 19:06 into the third period.

The Blizzard pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 43 penalty minutes.

Brookings' offense was clicking better than usual and put 38 shots on goal during the game, better than the 29.1 shots per game it averages.

Justin Moody also scored for Brookings. Other players who recorded assists for Brookings were Drew Brevig, who had two and Brandon Parker, Nick DeCenzo, and Jeff McFarland, who contributed one a piece.

The Wings forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. Aberdeen had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Wings put 37 shots on net during the contest, more than the 28.3 they average per game.

Aberdeen was helped by Zach Kraft, who finished with one goal. Kraft scored on the power play 18:20 into the second period to make the score 1-1. The Wings earned a power play opportunity when Matt Youso was put in the box for holding. Tanner Holmquist provided the assist. In addition, Aberdeen received assists from Steven Johnson, Peter Krieger, and Justin Parizek, who each chipped in one.

Drew Weigman made 35 saves for the Blizzard on 37 shots. Brookings registered two goals on five power play opportunities. The Blizzard ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Craig Lindegard was ejected from the game. Marcus Zelzer recorded 35 saves for Aberdeen. The Wings registered one goal on seven power play opportunities.
