Topeka beats Corpus Christi 8-4 as Sharkey gets hat trick

The Corpus Christi IceRays could not stop the Topeka RoadRunners' Kyle Sharkey, who tallied a hat trick in an 8-4 win.

Sharkey notched his first tally 1:41 into the second period. He then added goals at 7:29 into the second and at 9:37 into the second.

Corpus Christi's power play was ineffective against Topeka's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The RoadRunners put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the IceRays to score on any of their six power plays. Topeka put 30 shots on net during the contest, more than the 21.6 it averages per game. The RoadRunners outdid their season average for goals scored. Topeka has scored at the pace of 3.7 goals per game during the current campaign. The RoadRunners' normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. Topeka averages 1.9 goal allowed per game.

Topeka also got points from Tyler Poulsen, who also registered one goal and one assist, James Ring, who also finished with two goals and one assist, and Sean Gaffney, who also had one goal and two assists. Topeka also got a goal from Dan Dupell as well. Other players who recorded assists for Topeka were Drew Kariofiles, who had one and Scott Dornbrock, Trace Strahle, and Mick Bruce, who each chipped in two.

Corpus Christi found itself short handed often, totaling 28 penalty minutes and allowing seven power plays. By firing 43 shots on goal, the IceRays exceeded the 26.5 shots they average per game this year.

Corpus Christi was helped by Emil Romig, who tallied one goal. Romig scored 13:53 into the second period to make the score 6-4 Topeka. Rudy Sulmonde provided the assist. Corpus Christi additionally got points from Sulmonde, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Roman Uchyn, who also registered one goal and one assist. Alex Vazquez also scored for Corpus Christi. More assists for Corpus Christi came via Perry DArrisso, who had two and Brandon Smith, Ian McGilvrey, Jonathan Grebosky, and Travis Maxwell, who contributed one a piece.

Mackenzie Sawyer rejected 39 shots on goal for the RoadRunners. Topeka ended with 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and two majors. The IceRays' Jett Salinas stopped 22 shots out of the 29 that he faced.
