Wichita Falls uses shootout to best Corpus Christi, 4-3 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Wichita Falls Wildcats defeated the Corpus Christi IceRays in a shootout 4-3 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams.

Wichita Falls saw a three-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Wildcats made the score 3-0 on a short handed goal by Eliot Grauer at 14:37 in the second period. Corpus Christi evened things up at 3-3 on a short handed goal by Jalen Schulz at 2:25 in the third period.

Wichita Falls racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 44 minutes in penalty time. The Wildcats had been averaging 16.0 minutes in penalties per game. With 30 shots on target during the contest, Wichita Falls exceeded the 25.0 shots it averages per game this year.

The Wildcats were helped by Kyle Bauman, who grabbed one goal. Bauman scored 10:40 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Wichita Falls. In addition, Wichita Falls received assists from Erik Ouellette and Ben Kucera, who each chipped in one.

The IceRays forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and three majors for 39 minutes in penalty time. Corpus Christi surpassed its season average of 29.0 penalty minutes per game. The IceRays put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Wichita Falls to score on any of its eight power plays. Corpus Christi got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. The 31 shots that the IceRays put on net surpassed Corpus Christi's average of 25.1 shots per game this season.

The IceRays were helped by Travis Maxwell, who tallied one goal and one assist. Maxwell scored on the power play 19:37 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Wichita Falls. Corpus Christi had taken the advantage when the Wildcats' Rudy Junda got sent off for slashing. Ian McGilvrey assisted on the tally. Corpus Christi additionally got points from McGilvrey, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Corpus Christi were John Roisum, Rudy Sulmonde, Brandon Smith, and Jonathan Grebosky, who contributed one a piece.

Evan Cowley made 28 saves for Wichita Falls on 31 shots. The Wildcats ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and George Pagonis was ejected from the game. Jett Salinas rejected 26 shots on goal for the IceRays. Corpus Christi registered two goals on five power play opportunities.
