GAME RECAP

Corpus Christi beats Johnstown 5-3 as Sulmonde gets hat trick

Schwan SR-2    Sat, Sep 15, 2012

Rudy Sulmonde netted a hat trick to lead the Corpus Christi IceRays over the Johnstown Tomahawks, 5-3.

Sulmonde's first goal came 1:56 into the second period. He then added goals at 4:37 into the second and at 17:10 into the second.

Johnstown's power play was ineffective against Corpus Christi's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 17:44 into the third period. Three fighting penalties were dished out along with four game misconducts.

The IceRays were often in penalty trouble, totaling 18 minors and one major for 101 minutes in penalty time. Corpus Christi had been averaging 32.0 minutes in penalties per game.

Corpus Christi also got a goal from Tommaso Bucci as well. In addition, Corpus Christi received assists from Ian McGilvrey, Ryan Chiasson, Andrew Paras, and Joe Ginley, who each chipped in one and Perry DArrisso and Phil Pietroniro, who contributed three a piece.

The Tomahawks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 16 minors and three majors for 87 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 29.0 minutes per game Johnstown had been spending in the box. The Tomahawks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the IceRays to score on any of their eight power plays. With 26 shots on target during the contest, Johnstown exceeded the 23.2 shots it averages per game this year. The Tomahawks' defensemen played well offensively, producing two goals while racking up 11 shots.

Johnstown was helped by Jeff Bergh, who registered one goal. Bergh scored on the power play 19:18 into the second period to make the score 3-3. A unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Paras had put the Tomahawks on the power play. Evan Hesse picked up the assist. Kristaps Bazevics also scored for Johnstown. Other players who recorded assists for Johnstown were Cody Boyd, who had one.

Corpus Christi's Jett Salinas stopped 23 shots out of the 26 that he faced. For the IceRays, Roman Uchyn was ejected from the game. Bodhi Engum rejected 15 shots on goal for Johnstown. For the Tomahawks, Bazevics and Jaycob McCombs were ejected from the contest.
