Brookings beats Soo 2-0 as Deery gains shutout

Nick Deery recorded a shutout against the Soo Eagles as the Brookings Blizzard picked up a 2-0 win.

Brookings was led by Nick DeCenzo, who had one goal. DeCenzo scored on the power play 10:39 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Brookings. The Blizzard had gained a power play chance when Jared VanWormer was whistled for holding. Justin Moody assisted on the tally.

Brookings forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 51 minutes in penalty time. The Blizzard had been averaging 29.0 minutes in penalties per game. Brookings' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Soo power plays.

Grant Eichstadt also scored for Brookings. In addition, Brookings received assists from Derek Sand, Thomas Williams, and Dylan Zink, who contributed one a piece.

The Soo penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and two majors for 48 minutes in penalty time. The Eagles surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game.

Soo was led by John Nugent, who took four shots.

Nick Deery made 25 saves for the Blizzard on 25 shots. Brookings registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For the Blizzard, Zane Popilock was ejected from the game. Tyler Marble recorded 20 saves for the Eagles.
