Schwan SR-4    Thu, Sep 13, 2012

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Austin Bruins defeated the Corpus Christi IceRays in a shootout 3-2 (3-2 SO).

The two teams needed 10 turns to complete the shootout. Corpus Christi got shootout goals from Ian McGilvrey and Rudy Sulmonde. Austin also got shootout goals from Brandon Wahlin and AJ Reid.

The Bruins' penalty kill excelled, as Austin gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

The Bruins racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Austin had been spending in the box. The Bruins did not challenge the opposing goalie, launching only 10 shots on net to force seven saves. The shot total fell below Austin's season average of 16.3 shots per game.

The Bruins were helped by CJ Smith, who registered one goal. Smith scored short handed 17:11 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Austin. Austin was on a disadvantage when Michael Bond went off the ice for checking from behind. Wahlin provided the assist. Austin also got a goal from John Simonson as well. In addition, Austin received assists from Chris Fischer, who had one.

The IceRays' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Austin power plays.

Chris Stovall also scored for Corpus Christi. More assists for Corpus Christi came via John Roisum, Jonathan Grebosky, and Travis Maxwell, who each chipped in one.
