Johnstown vanquishes Kenai River in shootout, 6-5 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Johnstown Tomahawks defeated the Kenai River Brown Bears in a shootout 6-5 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for nine attempts between the teams.

Johnstown overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Tomahawks fell behind 4-2 after a power play goal by Kenai River's Albin Karlsson at 8:09 in the second period. Johnstown tied things up at 5-5 on a goal by Ryan Walker at 16:37 in the third period.

The Tomahawks were sparked by Jesse Kessler, who racked up one goal. Kessler scored 7:55 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Connor Wright provided the assist.

Johnstown failed to reach its usual level of shot production, putting 18 pucks on goal after averaging 22.8 shots per game this season. The Tomahawks surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Johnstown has scored at the pace of 3.3 goals per game during the current campaign.

Johnstown additionally got points from Evan Hesse, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Cody Boyd also scored for Johnstown. In addition, Johnstown received assists from Kristaps Bazevics, who had two and Cody Bentzel, Codey Hansen, and Jeff Bergh, who contributed one a piece.

By firing 36 shots on goal, the Brown Bears exceeded the 29.7 shots they average per game this year.

Kenai River also got a goal from Lucas Kohls as well. Other players who recorded assists for Kenai River were Matt Seidel, who had two and Jacob Davidson, Jake Bushey, Judd Loewenstein, Alex Jackstadt, and Chris Nuth, who each chipped in one.

Matthew McLaughlin made 12 saves before being replaced by Chris Truehl, who took the win and made 19 saves. The Tomahawks incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Gustaf Johansson made 12 saves for Kenai River on 17 shots. The Brown Bears incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
