Toronto Lakeshore vanquishes Buffalo in shootout, 5-4 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots defeated the Buffalo Jr. Sabres in a shootout 5-4 (2-0 SO).

The shootout featured four attempts between both teams. Toronto Lakeshore also got a shootout goal from Mike Vallescuro.

The Patriots overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. Toronto Lakeshore fell behind 4-1 after a goal by Buffalo's Sean Federow at 6:46 in the third period. The Patriots tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Nathan Feric at 15:51 in the third period.

Toronto Lakeshore got the win on the strength of a great game by Doug Bonar, who had one goal and two assists. Bonar scored 16:24 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Toronto Lakeshore. Michael Apreda assisted on the tally.

The Patriots racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. Toronto Lakeshore surpassed its season average of 14.0 penalty minutes per game. The Patriots excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Toronto Lakeshore forced the Jr. Sabres goalie Parker Gahagen to work between the pipes, taking 61 shots.

Toronto Lakeshore also got points from Feric, who also registered one goal and two assists and Kyle Dutra, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Daniel Tedesco also scored for Toronto Lakeshore. Other players who recorded assists for Toronto Lakeshore were Vallescuro and Alex D Oliveira, who contributed one a piece.

The Buffalo penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. The Jr. Sabres had been averaging 16.0 minutes in penalties per game. Buffalo's offense rang up 46 shots on the Patriots' net.

The Jr. Sabres were led by Tyler Gjurich, who had two goals and one assist. Gjurich scored the first of his two goals at 5:05 into the second period to make the score 1-1. David Seward provided the assist. Gjurich's next tally made the score 3-1 Buffalo with 4:09 left in the second period. Seward picked up the assist. Buffalo also got a goal from Alex Dagnal as well. More assists for Buffalo came via Tony DeVito, Ryan Schmelzer, Brian Ruff, and Nolan Sheeran, who each chipped in one.

Joseph Pianta recorded 42 saves for Toronto Lakeshore. The Patriots registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For Toronto Lakeshore, Brody Heleno was ejected from the game. Buffalo's Gahagen stopped 56 shots out of the 60 that he faced. The Jr. Sabres ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and R.J. Sciarrone was ejected from the game.
