Burlington survives Buffalo comeback, wins 5-4Wave Twin Rinks - Black Sat, Oct 06, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Buffalo Jr. Sabres tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Burlington Cougars would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4. Burlington made the score 5-2 on a goal by Tyler Mayea at 6:38 in the third period, and Buffalo got as close as 5-4 when Tyler Gjurich scored 18:53 into the third period. The Cougars' offense rang up 37 shots on the Jr. Sabres' net. Burlington could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game. The Cougars were led by Joe Sullivan, who tallied two goals. Sullivan scored the first of his two goals at 2:25 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Burlington. Adam Burnett assisted on the tally. Sullivan's next tally made the score 2-2 with 10:09 left in the first period. Burlington had gained a power play chance when Mark Powell was whistled for boarding. Jeremy Gottzmann picked up the assist. Burlington also got a goal from Cooper Richards as well. In addition, Burlington received assists from Gavin Shantz, who had two and Steven Mueller, Tyler Lepore, Mark Rodgers, Alex Murray, and Tyler VanKleef, who contributed one a piece. Buffalo racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game the Jr. Sabres had been spending in the box. Buffalo kept the Cougars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Murray made 30 saves on 34 shots. Alex Dagnal also scored for Buffalo. Other players who recorded assists for Buffalo were Derek Patterson, who had two and Darrin Trebes, Josh Kielich, Sean Federow, and Nolan Sheeran, who each chipped in one. Burlington registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Parker Gahagen rejected 32 shots on goal for the Jr. Sabres. Buffalo registered three goals on eight power play opportunities.
