Newmarket wins tough contest against Whitby, 3-2Ray Twinney Rink 1 Thu, Sep 27, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Newmarket Hurricanes escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Whitby Fury. Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Chris Chiste secured the win for Newmarket with a goal in the third period. Jeff Murray had two goals to lead the Hurricanes to victory. Murray's tallies came at 19:30 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Newmarket and 3:51 into the third to make the score 2-2. More assists for Newmarket came via Alex Bontje, Brycin Morrison, Matt LeMasurier, and Ian Farrell, who contributed one a piece. Whitby stifled Newmarket's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Fury found themselves short handed often, totaling 26 penalty minutes and allowing eight power plays. Whitby was helped by Sam Gray, who registered one goal. Gray scored on the power play 19:34 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Whitby. The Fury had gotten the advantage when the Hurricanes' Chiste was sent off for holding. Matt Davis picked up the assist. Whitby also got a goal from Sean Deroch as well. In addition, Whitby received assists from Tyler Park and Henry Thompson, who each chipped in one. Matthew Wintjes rejected 21 shots on goal for Newmarket. The Hurricanes incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Tyler Feaver recorded 26 saves for Whitby. The Fury registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
