Mississippi Surge outlasts Pensacola, 4-2

Mississippi Surge gutted out a close 4-2 win against the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Anthony Collins's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Pensacola's power play was ineffective against Mississippi Surge's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Mississippi Surge was paced by Collins, who racked up one goal and one assist. Collins scored on the power play 15:27 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge had gotten the advantage when the Ice Flyers' Brandon Vossberg was sent off for interference. Reid Edmondson provided the assist.

Mississippi Surge was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi Surge had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. Mississippi Surge's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. With 32 shots on target during the contest, Mississippi Surge exceeded the 18.6 shots it averages per game this year.

Mississippi Surge also got points from Adam Stuart, who also registered one goal and one assist. Shane Glover also scored for Mississippi Surge. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Matt Gordon, Joe Harcharik, and Jeff Grant, who contributed one a piece.

The Pensacola penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Flyers surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. Pensacola's offense was clicking better than usual and put 42 shots on goal during the game, better than the 22.2 shots per game it averages.

The Ice Flyers were helped by Pat Knowlton, who finished with one goal. Knowlton scored on the power play 43 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-1 Pensacola. Vossberg picked up the assist. Pensacola also got a goal from Jordan Chong as well. In addition, Pensacola received assists from Nick Dupuis, who had one and Ryan Salvis, who had two.

Kiefer Smiley made 40 saves for Mississippi Surge on 42 shots. Mississippi Surge registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Pensacola's Gerry Festa stopped 28 shots out of the 31 that he faced.
