Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Buffalo Stars defeated the Suffolk Juniors in a shootout 7-6 (1-0 SO). The shootout featured six attempts between both teams.Buffalo overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Stars fell behind 4-2 after a goal by Suffolk's Christopher Seeback at 8:52 in the second period. Buffalo tied things up at 6-6 on a power play goal by Tyler States at 14:18 in the third period. The Stars' penalty kill excelled, as Buffalo gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays. The Stars forced the Juniors goalie Peter Fosso to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots. Buffalo's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Stars average 1.6 goal per contest. Buffalo could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 46 minutes in penalties during the game. The Stars were led by Patrick Schmelzinger, who registered two goals and one assist. Schmelzinger scored the first of his two goals at 19:12 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Brendan Brown provided the assist. Schmelzinger's next tally made the score 5-5 with 15:19 left in the third period. Buffalo had gotten the advantage when Suffolk's Cameron Smith was sent off for roughing. Tyler Furst assisted on the tally. Suffolk's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Juniors finished with 58 penalty minutes. Suffolk was helped by Jason Reiter, who tallied two goals. Reiter scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:01 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Suffolk. The Juniors had gained a power play chance when Cohen was whistled for tripping. Michael Leone picked up the assist. Reiter's next tally on the power play made the score 6-5 Suffolk with 12:03 left in the third period. Suffolk played down a man on Leone's unsportsmanlike conduct. Suffolk additionally got points from Tyler Murphy, who also had two goals and one assist to lead the team in points, Seeback, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Matthew Gault, who also registered one goal and one assist. More assists for Suffolk came via Joseph Duszak and Christopher Stemke, who contributed two a piece. Thomas Brown rejected 44 shots on goal for Buffalo. The Stars registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. Fosso recorded 30 saves for the Juniors.
