Hampton Roads beats Potomac 8-5 as Wilson gets hat trick

Jeremy Wilson lifted the Hampton Roads Whalers to an 8-5 victory with a hat trick against the Potomac Patriots.

Wilson's first goal came 15:18 into the first period. He then added goals at 18:08 into the first and at 12:00 into the second.

Hampton Roads forced Patriots' netminders to work between the pipes, totaling 38 shots and forcing 30 saves. Derek Guzik made 11 stops and TJ Hollen made 19. The Whalers surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Hampton Roads averages 3.9 goals per contest. The Whalers were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to two goals off of 12 man advantages. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. Hampton Roads struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 32 penalty minutes for seven opposing power plays.

Hampton Roads additionally got points from Samuel Jenkins, who also had two goals and one assist, Dillon Kivo, who also finished with two goals and one assist, and Regen Cavanagh, who also grabbed one goal and four assists to lead the team in points. More assists for Hampton Roads came via Jacob Toro, who had one and Alexander Dempsey, who had three.

Potomac forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 12 minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. The Patriots had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. Potomac's offense rang up 33 shots on the Whalers' net. The Patriots' goal total was higher than their season average. Potomac has scored at the pace of 2.8 goals per game during the current campaign.

The Patriots were helped by Michael Santiago, who registered one goal. Santiago scored on the power play 14:07 into the second period to make the score 4-3 Hampton Roads. Potomac earned a power play opportunity when Adam Choc was put in the box for slashing. Kyle Powers provided the assist. Potomac also got points from Miles Miller, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Micah Dabao, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Jack Strycharz also scored for Potomac. In addition, Potomac received assists from Judd Parker, who had one and Tyler Nolan, who had two.

Hampton Roads' Taylor Brost stopped 28 shots out of the 33 that he faced.
