Portland uses shootout to best Bay State, 4-3 (3-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Portland Jr Pirates defeated the Bay State Breakers in a shootout 4-3 (3-2 SO).

The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams. Bay State got shootout goals from John Duranczyk and Alex Soviero. In addition to the clincher, Portland got shootout goals from Kenneth Richards and Nick Robinson.

The Jr Pirates overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Portland fell behind 3-1 after a goal by the Breakers' Ryan ODonnell at 17:01 in the second period. The Jr Pirates tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Robinson at 9:29 in the third period.

Dennis Patenaude had a great game for Portland, netting two goals. Patenaude scored at 1:59 into the second period to make the score 1-1 and again while 9:29 into the third to make the score 3-2 Bay State.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 11:22 into the second period. Three fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Jr Pirates racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. Portland had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Jr Pirates forced Bay State goalie Matthew Farrell to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

More assists for Portland came via Nicholas Whitten, who had one.

The Breakers forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 13.0 minutes per game Bay State had been spending in the box. The Breakers' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Portland power plays. Bay State kept Portland's goalie busy throughout the game, and Christopher Storey made 49 saves on 52 shots.

The Breakers were led by Nicholas Russo, who registered one goal and one assist. Russo scored 5:59 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Bay State. Kevin Sheehan picked up the assist. Bay State also got points from Christopher Perry, who also finished with one goal and one assist. In addition, Bay State received assists from Soviero, Charles Murphy, and Connor Duffy, who each chipped in one.

For the Jr Pirates, Robert Kerns and Liam Slyne were ejected from the contest. Farrell rejected 32 shots on goal for Bay State. The Breakers registered one goal on nine power play opportunities. Bay State ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Dan Gibbons was ejected from the game.
