Portland uses early goal to top Salem, 5-3

The Portland Jr Pirates beat the Salem Ice Dogs, 5-3, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Deivids Jasis provided Portland with the game-winning tally when he scored 8:57 into the the first period. The Jr Pirates had gotten the advantage when Salem's Adriani was sent off for tripping. Callen Morisseau picked up the assist.

The Ice Dogs' power play was ineffective against Portland's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Jr Pirates racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. Portland had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Jr Pirates' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Salem power plays. Portland forced Salem goalie Bradley Radin to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. The Jr Pirates' goal total was higher than their season average. Portland has scored at the pace of 2.7 goals per game during the current campaign.

The Jr Pirates were helped by Kenneth Richards, who had one goal. Richards scored short handed 11:24 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Portland. Portland was on a disadvantage when Victor Papa went off the ice for unsportsmanlike conduct. Robert Downing assisted on the tally. Portland additionally got points from Morisseau, who also racked up one goal and two assists and Evan Jewell, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Portland also got a goal from Liam Slyne as well. Other players who recorded assists for Portland were Michael Donato, Nick Robinson, and Ryan Locke, who each chipped in one.

The Ice Dogs kept the Jr Pirates' goalie busy throughout the game, and Christopher Storey made 31 saves on 34 shots.

Salem was led by Justin McKelvey, who tallied three goals. More assists for Salem came via Raymond Jacques and Aaron Reddick, who contributed one a piece and Nicholas Latham and Tom Laus, who each chipped in two.

Portland registered two goals on four power play opportunities. Radin recorded 40 saves for the Ice Dogs. Salem ended with 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major.
