Potomac uses early goal to top Hampton Roads, 3-1Chilled Ponds I.S.C. Sat, Dec 08, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
Jack Strycharz gave the Potomac Patriots the lead in the first period, and the Hampton Roads Whalers was never able to catch up in a close game that ended 3-1. Potomac took over the lead for good with a goal by Strycharz at 5:19 in the first period. Riley Wanat assisted on the tally.The Patriots were led by goalie TJ Hollen, who finished with 40 saves while allowing one goal. Hollen certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 4.05 entering the contest. Potomac's penalty kill excelled, as the Patriots gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays. Potomac stifled Hampton Roads' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Patriots were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 18 penalty minutes. Potomac was led by Micah Dabao, who finished with one goal and one assist. Dabao scored 16:33 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Potomac. Tyler Nolan provided the assist. Potomac additionally got points from Nolan, who also racked up one goal and one assist. More assists for Potomac came via Jeffrey Egan, who had one. The Whalers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Patriots to score on any of their four power plays. Hampton Roads did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Whalers average 3.5 goals per game. Hampton Roads' offense rang up 41 shots on Potomac's net. The Whalers were led by Alexander Dempsey, who scored the team's only goal. Dempsey scored 46 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-1 Potomac. Craig Boyd assisted on the tally. Taylor Brost rejected 24 shots on goal for Hampton Roads. The Whalers incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
