Portland stifles Connecticut's comeback, gains 5-3 victory

The Portland Jr Pirates came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Connecticut Oilers, but did just enough to escape with a 5-3 victory.

Portland led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Jr Pirates' Callen Morisseau's scored at 8:35 in the third period to put Portland up 4-1.

The Jr Pirates stifled Connecticut's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Portland forced the Oilers goalie Christopher Bastone to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots. The Jr Pirates found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Portland averages 2.5 goals per game.

Connecticut struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 44 penalty minutes for six opposing power plays.

The Oilers were led by Stephan Seeger, who registered one goal and two assists. Seeger scored 5:38 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Todd Brown assisted on the tally. Connecticut also got a goal from Philip Prins as well. Other players who recorded assists for Connecticut were Erik Nergaard, who had one.

The Jr Pirates' Cam Riddle stopped 26 shots out of the 29 that he faced. Portland incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Bastone recorded 33 saves for Connecticut. The Oilers registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. For Connecticut, Troy Lynch was ejected from the game.
