Portland shrugs off penalties, upends New Hampshire, 5-2

The Portland Jr Pirates, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the New Hampshire Jr Monarchs' power play opportunities and emerged with a 5-2 victory.

Portland was led by Callen Morisseau, who registered one goal. Morisseau scored 13:27 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Portland. Ryan Locke assisted on the tally.

The Jr Pirates forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and two majors for 52 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 24.0 minutes per game Portland had been spending in the box. The Jr Pirates forced New Hampshire goalie Cole Burack to work between the pipes, taking 51 shots. Portland surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Jr Pirates average 2.4 goals per game. The defensemen of Portland were also effective in the Jr Monarchs' zone, and came away with three goals.

Portland additionally got points from Dakota Keene, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Portland included Deivids Jasis, who had one and Nick Robinson, who had two. More assists for Portland came via Justin Munck, Michael Donato, Victor Papa, Gregory Lodge, Nicholas Whitten, and Nathan Bergeron, who each chipped in one.

The New Hampshire penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 53 minutes in penalty time. The Jr Monarchs surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. New Hampshire's offense operated below it season average. The Jr Monarchs average 5.8 goals per game. New Hampshire kept the Jr Pirates' goalie busy throughout the game, and Maxwell Boucher made 36 saves on 38 shots. The Jr Monarchs' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. New Hampshire averages 2.3 goals allowed per game. The Jr Monarchs were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to one goal off of 10 man advantages.

New Hampshire was helped by Michael Bears, who grabbed one goal. Bears scored 2:25 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Portland. Davis Algra picked up the assist. Shane Tracy also scored for New Hampshire. In addition, New Hampshire received assists from Eric Grover and James Jamieson, who contributed one a piece.

Portland registered one goal on four power play opportunities. The Jr Pirates ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Donato was ejected from the game. The Jr Monarchs' Burack stopped 46 shots out of the 51 that he faced. For New Hampshire, Tracy was ejected from the game.
