Morretti's big game bests Space Coast in 10-3 Salem win

Behind a great game by Nunzio Morretti, who had four goals and two assists, the Salem Ice Dogs defeated the Space Coast Hurricanes, 10-3.

Morretti's first goal came 6:36 into the first period. He then added goals at 21:18 into the first, at 22:18 into the first, and at 18:12 into the second.

Salem excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The Ice Dogs found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Salem has scored at the pace of 2.5 goals per game during the current campaign.

Salem additionally got points from Nicholas Nonis, who also grabbed one goal and two assists, Nicholas Latham, who also finished with one goal and two assists, Justin McKelvey, who also had one goal and one assist, Aaron Reddick, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Tom Laus, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. In addition, Salem received assists from George Winer, who had two, Maximillian DelVento and Athanasi Kourkoulis, who each chipped in one, and David Spry and Trevor Bettano, who contributed three a piece.

The defensemen of Space Coast were also effective in the Ice Dogs' zone, and came away with two goals.

The Hurricanes were led by Matthew Montoya-Martin, who registered two goals and one assist. Montoya-Martin scored the first of his two goals at 2:04 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Space Coast. Montoya-Martin's next tally made the score 5-2 Salem with -55 seconds left in the first period. Alexander DeYoung picked up the assist. Kyle Baumback also scored for Space Coast. More assists for Space Coast came via Benjamin Ferreira, who had one.

Shawn Horton made 16 saves for Salem on 19 shots. The Ice Dogs totaled 33 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-2 on the power play. Salem ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Bettano was ejected from the game. Space Coast's Joseph Herda stopped 20 shots out of the 30 that he faced. The Hurricanes incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
