Rodgers' big game bests Connecticut in 5-1 Jersey Hitmen win

Jersey Hitmen's Luke Rodgers had a big offensive game, scoring one goal and contributing three assists in his team's 5-1 win over the Connecticut Oilers.

Rodgers got on the board by slotting home a power play goal 19:08 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Jersey Hitmen had taken the advantage when Connecticut's Mahood got sent off for slashing. Justin McKenzie assisted on the tally. Rodgers dished an assist on Matt Langlois's goal that made the score 2-1 Jersey Hitmen at 10:16 into the second period. He then added assists on Ruslan Rakhmatov's goal at 26 seconds into the third and on James Felice's goal at 48 seconds into the third.

The Oilers were doomed by their poor performance on special teams, as Jersey Hitmen was able to score four times while on the power play.

Jersey Hitmen's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Connecticut power plays. Connecticut was unable to stop Jersey Hitmen from sending pucks towards the net, and Jersey Hitmen eventually piled up 51 shots on goal. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. Jersey Hitmen was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 28 penalty minutes.

Jersey Hitmen also got points from Felice, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Jersey Hitmen also got a goal from Michael Taussi as well. Other players who recorded assists for Jersey Hitmen were Glenn Florczak, who had two and Collin Kirkpatrick, David Kleyman, and TJ Thaler, who contributed one a piece.

The Oilers' offense operated below they season average. Connecticut puts an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game. The Oilers struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 22 penalty minutes for nine opposing power plays.

More assists for Connecticut came via Nicholas Desimone, who had one.

Jordan Hulahan recorded 21 saves for Jersey Hitmen. Christopher Bastone made 46 saves for Connecticut on 51 shots.
