Salem falls to Portland in overtime, 5-1 (OT)

Kenneth Richards gave the Portland Jr Pirates a 5-1 (OT) victory over the Salem Ice Dogs when he scored 1:44 into the extra period.

Portland was paced by Liam Slyne, who grabbed one goal. Slyne scored 19:22 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Portland. Colt Steele assisted on the tally.

The Jr Pirates made Salem's goalies to work all game long, firing 51 shots and forcing 46 saves. Bradley Radin made 29 stops and Shawn Horton made 17. Portland put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Ice Dogs to score on any of their four power plays. The Jr Pirates' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Portland averages 2.2 goals per contest.

Portland additionally got points from Jason Harmon, who also had one goal and one assist and Evan Jewell, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Callen Morisseau also scored for Portland. More assists for Portland came via Justin Munck, who had two and Gregory Lodge, Nick Robinson, Nathan Bergeron, and Ryan Locke, who each chipped in one.

Salem racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 16.0 minutes per game the Ice Dogs had been spending in the box. Salem's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Portland power plays.

Salem also got a goal from Adam Merry as well. In addition, Salem received assists from Nunzio Morretti, who had one.

The Jr Pirates' Christopher Storey stopped 19 shots out of the 20 that he faced. Portland incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
