Valley vanquishes South Shore in shootout, 8-7 (2-1 SO)Haverhill-North 1 Sat, Oct 20, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Valley Junior Warriors defeated the South Shore Kings in a shootout 8-7 (2-1 SO). The shootout lasted for eight attempts between the teams. South Shore got a shootout goal from Arturs Buss. Valley also got a shootout goal from Matthew Culot.The Junior Warriors saw a five-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Valley made the score 6-1 on a goal by Luke Miller at 13:54 in the second period. The Kings evened things up at 7-7 on a goal by Philip Falkof at 14:42 in the third period. The Junior Warriors got the win thanks to a great game by Brendan Heinze, who had two goals and one assist. Heinze scored the first of his two goals at 15:15 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Miller picked up the assist. Heinze's next tally made the score 5-1 Valley with 9:40 left in the second period. Valley was on a disadvantage when Brendan Philippon went off the ice for cross checking. Miller provided the assist. The Junior Warriors made South Shore's goaltenders to work without much rest, getting 31 shots and forcing 23 saves. Ian Freeman made 12 stops and Kory LeBlanc made 11. Valley put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Kings to score on any of their seven power plays. The Junior Warriors surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Valley averages 3.4 goals per contest. Valley also got points from Miller, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Cody Laperle, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Valley included Stephen Faia, who had one and Culot, who had two. More assists for Valley came via Mitchell Moran, who had two and Eriberto Cordero, Andrew Sousa, and Morgan MacLean, who contributed one a piece. South Shore forced the Junior Warriors goalie Matthew Saraceno to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots. The Kings could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 18 minutes in penalties during the game. South Shore additionally got points from Daniel Clifford, who also tallied one goal and two assists and Evan Jacques, who also registered one goal and two assists. Beau Starrett also scored for South Shore. Other players who recorded assists for South Shore were Paul Marino, Stephen Rocchio, Kevin Divver, Corey Flynn, Connor Johnson, and Paul Wagner, who each chipped in one. Valley's Saraceno stopped 36 shots out of the 43 that he faced. The Junior Warriors incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
