NY AppleCore squeaks by Portland, 3-2

The NY AppleCore Minor B and the Portland Jr Pirates were evenly matched throughout their contest, but NY AppleCore made the most of its opportunities and won, 3-2.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by John Stevenson at 9:28 of the second period.

The Minor B were sparked by Jonas Toupal, who grabbed one goal. Toupal scored 10:19 into the second period to make the score 3-1 NY AppleCore. Cale Schoenberg picked up the assist.

NY AppleCore's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Portland power plays. The Minor B got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. NY AppleCore's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Minor B finished with 16 penalty minutes.

Andrew Barroso also scored for NY AppleCore. Other players who recorded assists for NY AppleCore were Jonathan Kaszuba, who had two and Frank Lanni, Liam Pues, and Blake Manginell, who each chipped in one.

Portland excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

The Jr Pirates were helped by Evan Jewell, who had one goal. Jewell scored 17:13 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Portland. Callen Morisseau assisted on the tally. Portland also got a goal from Justin Munck as well. More assists for Portland came via Timothy Storey, who had one.

NY AppleCore's Christoph Mutschin stopped 22 shots out of the 24 that he faced. Maxwell Boucher rejected 26 shots on goal for Portland. The Jr Pirates incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
