Pembroke beats Kanata 2-1 after comeback scare

The Kanata Stallions tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Pembroke Lumber Kings held on for a 2-1 victory.

Pembroke took a 2-0 lead during the second period, only to have Kanata storm back on a Curtis Watson goal 8:34 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Lumber Kings' Darren Smith was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 48 saves and let only one puck past him. Smith managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.72 prior to the game.

Pembroke was paced by Timmy Moore, who finished with one goal. Moore scored 18:43 into the second period to make the score Pembroke. Emilio Audi picked up the assist.

The Lumber Kings' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Kanata power plays. Pembroke kept the Stallions' goalie busy throughout the game, and Brandon Lane made 37 saves on 39 shots.

Ben Dalpe also scored for Pembroke. More assists for Pembroke came via Jordan Larson, Owen McDade, and Liam Biard, who each chipped in one.

Kanata stifled the Lumber Kings' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Stallions' offense operated below they season average. Kanata puts an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game. Pembroke was unable to stop the Stallions from sending pucks towards the net, and Kanata eventually piled up 49 shots on goal.

In addition, Kanata received assists from Derian Plouffe and Devin Fullum, who contributed one a piece.

The Lumber Kings incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Stallions ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. Kanata ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Watson was ejected from the game.
