Granite City falls to North Iowa in overtime, 2-1 (OT)Armadillo Deck Arena East Fri, Mar 23, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The North Iowa Bulls' Nick Marsh scored 10:32 into overtime to beat the Granite City Lumberjacks, 2-1 (OT). North Iowa evened the best of three series at 1-1 and forced a deciding game three. Granite City was stymied by the Bulls netminder Matthew Bartels, who stopped 40 shots during the victory. Bartels certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 1.61 entering the contest. North Iowa pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 23 penalty minutes. North Iowa also got a goal from Matt Kroska as well. In addition, North Iowa received assists from Patrick Sivets, who had two and Steve Heller and Noah Anderson, who contributed one a piece. The Lumberjacks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Granite City forced the Bulls goalie Bartels to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots. The Lumberjacks were led by Aaron Azevedo, who scored the team's only goal. Azevedo scored on the power play 18:11 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Granite City. Granite City had gained a power play chance when Heller was whistled for slashing. Riley Bengtson assisted on the tally. Matt Grove made 26 saves for the Lumberjacks on 28 shots. Granite City totaled 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors and two majors and went 1-for-7 on the power play.
