Ayr beats Hagersville 4-3 after comeback scare

The Ayr Centennials survived a determined comeback attempt by the Hagersville Hawks on the way to a 4-3 win.

A goal by Jordan Eby put Ayr up 4-2 in the third period, but Hagersville pulled to within one on Mike Gruhl's tally 18:36 into the third period.

With the win, the Centennials evened the series at 1-1 in the best of seven showdown.

Ayr was paced on offense by Philip Durnford and Eby, who combined for four points. Durnford registered two goals and Eby also added one goal and one assist.

The Centennials kept the Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Jordan Ironside made 27 saves on 31 shots.

Andrew Tapsell also scored for Ayr. Other players who recorded assists for Ayr were Tyler Gauthier, Jon Witt, Nathan Redford, and Adam Brubacher, who contributed one a piece.

Hagersville was led by Derek Medeiros, who grabbed two goals. Medeiros scored the first of his two goals at 8:15 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Greg Longboat assisted on the tally. Medeiros' next tally made the score 2-1 Hagersville with 9:11 left in the first period. The Hawks had gotten the advantage when Ayr's Redford was sent off for boarding. Jesse Ross picked up the assist. More assists for Hagersville came via Brock McEachern, Deacan Krause, and Eric Drehmer, who each chipped in one.

The Centennials' Lee Doherty stopped 23 shots out of the 26 that he faced. Ayr incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Hagersville incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
