Walkerton wins tough contest against Mitchell, 3-2

The Walkerton Hawks gutted out a close 3-2 win against the Mitchell Hawks.

Walkerton gained the winning advantage on a goal by Eric Lekun 18:16 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

The win moved the Hawks to down 2-0 in the best of seven series.

Lekun was all over the ice for Walkerton, as he finished with two goals in the win.

The Hawks pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 26 penalty minutes.

Walkerton stifled Mitchell's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Hawks were unable to stop the Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Walkerton eventually piled up 33 shots on goal.

Walkerton also got a goal from Shane MacDonald as well. Other players who recorded assists for Walkerton were Andy Mitchell, who had two and Jordan Turcotte and Mike Bujold, who contributed one a piece.

Mitchell's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Walkerton power plays. The Hawks forced the Hawks goalie Jeff Flagler to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. Mitchell's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Hawks finished with 22 penalty minutes.

Mitchell was helped by Jade Maxwell, who tallied two goals. Maxwell scored the first of his two goals short handed at 2:08 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Walkerton. The Hawks found themselves down a man on Brent Rae's tripping. Chris Newcombe picked up the assist. Maxwell's next tally short handed made the score 2-2 with 7:31 left in the second period. Newcombe provided the assist. More assists for Mitchell came via Ryan Sykes, who had one.

Flagler recorded 29 saves for Walkerton. Mitchell's Drew Reinhardt stopped 30 shots out of the 33 that he faced. The Hawks registered zero goals on nine power play opportunities. Mitchell ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brendan Nicholson was ejected from the game.
