Guelph wins tough contest against Cambridge, 3-2

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Guelph Hurricanes escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Cambridge Winter Hawks.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Brandon Stewart at 19:33 of the third period.

After the loss made the series score 2-3 in the best of seven series, Cambridge faces elimination next time out.

Guelph was sparked by Stewart, who finished with one goal and one assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 20:00 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Hurricanes excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Guelph was often in penalty trouble, as it ended with six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time.

Guelph additionally got points from Chris Taylor, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Guelph also got a goal from Marc Shanks as well. Other players who recorded assists for Guelph were Mike Iacocca, who had two and Daniel Cotroneo and Chad Herron, who contributed one a piece.

The Winter Hawks forced the Hurricanes goalie Colin Furlong to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots.

Cambridge was helped by Josh Timpano, who tallied one goal. Timpano scored short handed 18:25 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Guelph. The Winter Hawks played down a man on Cody Gratton's roughing. Cameron Pentsa also scored for Cambridge. More assists for Cambridge came via Brennon Pearce, who had one.

Furlong recorded 37 saves for Guelph. The Hurricanes registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. For Guelph, Michael Wilkins was ejected from the game. Brendan Gorecki rejected 26 shots on goal for Cambridge. The Winter Hawks ended with 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. Cambridge ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Timpano was ejected from the game.
