Belle River survives Mooretown comeback, wins 3-2

The Belle River Canadiens survived a determined comeback attempt by the Mooretown Flags on the way to a 3-2 win.

Belle River made the score 3-1 on a goal by Scott Chauvin at 1:03 in the third period, and Mooretown got as close as 3-2 when Josh Teschke scored 12:26 into the third period.

The win gave the Canadiens a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Both teams had a hard time staying out of the box, and they combined for 17 penalties during the game.

Belle River's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Mooretown power plays. The Flags were unable to stop the Canadiens from sending pucks towards the net, and Belle River eventually piled up 41 shots on goal. The Canadiens could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 18 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Cole Chevalier, who totaled four minutes in penalty time with two minors.

Belle River additionally got points from Chauvin, who also registered one goal and one assist and Chris DiNatale, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Branden Larocque also scored for Belle River. Other players who recorded assists for Belle River were Keith Maisonville, Jason Koumaris, Donnovan Plummer, and Nik Dobrich, who each chipped in one.

Mooretown was held below its usual level of production. The Flags average four goals per game. Mooretown forced Belle River goalie Zakk Olvin to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots. The Flags could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 16 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Jeff Schroeter, who totaled 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.

Mooretown was helped by Andrew Sokol, who had one goal. Sokol scored 18:17 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Dan Lumley assisted on the tally. More assists for Mooretown came via Calab Harse, who had one.

Olvin recorded 31 saves for the Canadiens. Belle River registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Andrew Ganter made 38 saves for the Flags on 41 shots.
